The whole area around the city of Hierapolis is filled with calcium-rich hot springs. You can see some wall ruins in the background.
Another look at the pools at the hot springs. The water is not too hot, around 32 degrees.
Earthquakes caused a lot of devastation around Hierapolis. Here you can see the ruins of the Church of St. Philip and a smaller theatre. According to tradition, Philip was martyred at Hierapolis under the persecution of the Roman emperor Domitian (A.D. 81-96).
The big theatre, an immense structure that seats thousands of people, is impressive even today. The scene is very pretty with the city and white calcium rocks in the background.
